what your purpose is in writing, your focus on your subject witl change as well as the details and words you choose

 

To specify your purpose a little deeper you can overview what you are about to do in your writing as well as a reasonable intended outcome for your reading.

 

ex) To explain the steps in a new office procedure so that staffers will be able to follow it without difficulty

ex) To analyze how Annie Dillard's "Total Eclipse" builds to its climax so that readers appreciate author's skill
