제 4장 교수님께 드리는 편지

수업 시간이었다.

오이디푸스 렉스를 강의하시다가

시간을 표현한

한 그래프를 그리시며 설명을 하신다.

난 그 그래프를 설명하시는 교수님의 설명을 경청하다

갑자기 한 생각이 번득 스쳐지나간다.

그 때 앞에 앉아있었던 영감 받은 나의 모습이 눈에 들어오셨던

교수님은 잠시 놀라 멈칫하시고는 계속 강의를 하셨다.

 

집에서 어머니께선 오랜 세월동안 기도를 해오셨다.

그 기도들을 하실 때 예언처럼 계시를 받으시곤 하셨는데

그 일이 생각과 다르게 일어날 때가 많았다.

난 항상 그 사실이 묘하게도 의아했다.

 

물결무늬의 곡선과

그것을 관통하는 선

그리고 그 만나는 지점들

 

이 그래프는 나에게 말하는 것이 있었다.

하나님의 실제 이루시는 일은 현실에서 물결무늬 와 같이 우여곡절이 있다

하지만 어머니께서 받으시는 계시는 옳은 경우에도 이 직선 같은 것이어서

어머니와 나는 그 굴곡을 예측할 수 없다.

하지만

하나님의 이루시는 현실과

어머니의 받으신 계시된 일이 맞부딪히는 지점들이 있는 것이다.

난 이 그래프를 보고 이 생각이 번득인 것이었다.

 

수업이 끝난 뒤에도 난 칠판의 이 그래프를 한동안 보고 있었다.

교수님은 들고오신 교재를 챙기시면서

그런 나를 유심히 바라보셨다.

그러다가 통로를 막고 서 있는 학생들에게 비켜달라는 소리 한 마디 없이

비켜나가는 나를 끝까지 바라보고 계셨다.

 

It was during class.

The professor is lecturing on Oedipus Rex.

She draws a graph for a concrete timeline visual.

I follow her words and watch the graph lines forming on the chalkboard and suddenly I am caught by a thought.

I was sitting towards the front and my transformed expression must have caught her eye.

She paused for a moment before continuing with her lecture.

 

At home, for long years mom had prayed.

Sometimes she would even receive prophecies.

But often than not things would happen differently though some things did come to pass.

This fact always had struck me odd somehow.

 

The wavy line

And the straight line that goes right through it horizontal.

And the points that they met

 

This graph was speaking to me.

God makes things happen in reality with many unexpected curves

But the prophesies mother receives is somewhat like the straight line, anticipatory and simple.

But the realities that God brings about in our lives

And the events in mom's prophesies

Have points that they must meet.

This thought flashed in me as I saw the graph.

 

After the class was over, I was still in my seat looking at the graph.

Professor was looking on as she was gathering her books.

When I was making my way out the door going around the girls that were standing in the aisle instead of asking them to move aside,

She was still looking on.
